Chapter Seventeen

Katie stood in her bathroom Saturday evening fussing with her hair. She couldn’t decide whether to wear it pulled back in a ponytail, or down around her shoulders. After a few more moments of indecisiveness, she decided to wear it down.

Ding-dong!

She hurriedly applied her lipstick and ran to answer the door.

Nathan stood on the other side looking about as nervous as she felt.

“Hi,” she said, taking a step back to let him in.

“You look very nice.”

“Thank you,” she answered, noticing that he was wearing a light blue button-down that matched his eyes perfectly.

After leaning over to greet Lance, he straightened up and smiled. “Are you ready to go?”

Katie and Nathan sat in a corner of The Sea Shack near the rear entrance. There were a lot of people here this evening, but the waiter had seated them right away.

“That badge must get you a lot of perks.”

“Why’s that?”

“We didn’t have to wait in line.”

He shrugged. “I guess it has its advantages.”

Katie placed her elbows on the table, letting her eyes wander around the restaurant. It seemed to her that the owner had gone to a great deal of trouble to make the place resemble a real shack. The walls were covered in crooked weather-worn planks and old sea memorabilia. She stared at the large fish mounted on the wall above Nathan’s head and determined that it was the most hideous-looking creature she had ever seen.

The one redeeming quality it held was the floor to ceiling windows that covered both sides of the establishment. It gave off a beautiful panoramic view of the crystal blue water. “It’s really pretty here, don’t you think?”

Nathan glanced out the window and then back at her. “Mmm-hmm.” Lately, the only thing the water meant to him was another dead body. He didn’t think he could ever view the lake in a good way again.

After the waiter had come and taken their order, Katie noticed several people looking their way. They were trying to be inconspicuous about it but were doing it just the same. Nathan seemed to notice it as well and adjusted the collar of his shirt.

She took a sip of her water, trying to dismiss it. “So, why don’t you wear a uniform like your deputies?”

“Because I’m the chief,” he said, grinning at her, “I don’t have to wear one.”

“Is that another perk?”

“Absolutely.” He cocked his eyebrow. “But I can get a cowboy hat if you like.”

“Now that I’d like to see,” she said, laughing.

Nathan leaned back in his chair. “I know that Cheryl told you all about me. But I know next to nothing about you, except that you hail from Seattle.”

“What would you like to know?”

“Mmm,” he said, pursing his lips. “Do you have any brothers or sisters? Or any boyfriends—ex, or current—floating around?”

“No, and no.”

“Where did you learn to cook so well? Did you go to a culinary school?”

She tilted her head and smiled. “Are you interrogating me?”

He smiled back at her. “I’m very good at it. Don’t you think?”

She giggled.
